Welcome to the City of San Diego's Bicycle Master Plan Update Online Engagement Forum!

About

The City of San Diego is updating its Bicycle Master Plan, originally adopted in 2013, to align with the City’s Mobility Master Plan, Strategic Plan, General Plan, and Climate Action Plan. This update will guide future bicycle investments and help prioritize active transportation projects citywide, with an emphasis on equity and serving communities with the greatest needs. The project vision is to improve and grow a safe, connected, and convenient network for people of all ages and abilities who ride bicycles and scooters.

Help Shape the Future Network!

The City’s Draft Future Bicycle Network recommends a total of nearly 2,100 miles of bikeways including almost 700 miles of new separated bikeways, over 600 miles of bicycle lanes, and over 800 miles of other bicycle routes and bicycle paths.

We want to know what you think:

  • Does the draft bicycle network provide connections to key destinations?
  • Were gaps in the network addressed?
  • Are there any connections or gaps that we missed that you would like to see added?

About the Draft Future Bikeways

The following describes the different types of bikeways in the City of San Diego's draft future bicycle network. The bikeway types were selected based on speed and volume data in alignment with Caltrans Design Information Bulletin 94 (Complete Streets: Contextual Design Guidance) and NACTO Urban Bikeway Design Guide.

Bikeway Types

The City of San Diego has six bikeway types.
  • Bike Path - Class I

Off-street paths completely separated from motor vehicle traffic. These provide safer connections within roadway right-of-way or an exclusive right-of-way.

  • Bike Lane - Class II

Class II: On-street striped lanes for one-way bike travel, adjacent to vehicle lanes. Often enhanced with markings or signage, they are suitable for lower-speed roadways.

  • Bike Route - Class III

Class III: Shared roadways with motor vehicles, marked with sharrows and signage. Best for low-speed, low-traffic streets, connecting to parks, schools, or other bikeways

  • Bike Boulevard - Class III Enhanced

Shared streets with additional traffic-calming features like road humps or diverters. Designed for safe and low-stress cycling on residential or low-speed roads.

  • Separated Bikeway - Class IV

Bike lanes separated from traffic by vertical elements like curbs or flex posts. They provide a safer, more comfortable option for riders of all ages and abilities. The City has one-way and two-way Class IV bikeways.

  • Shared Bus-Bike Lane

An option where separate bus and high-comfort bike lanes are not feasible. Best suited to low speeds and moderate bus headways, with bus passing discouraged and bicycle passing limited to stops.
